ISO 14001 Lead Implementer Certification

The ISO 14001 Implementer certifications are professional certifications for professionals needing to implement an Environmental Management System (EMS) and, in case of the ISO 14001 Lead Implementer Certification, needing to manage an implementation project.

The principal competencies and knowledge skills needed by the market are the ability to support an organization in implementing and managing an Environmental Management System as specified in ISO 14001:2015: planning, implementation, surveillance, re-examination and operation of an EMS, continual improvement of EMS, management’s commitment, follow-up and review.

Various professions may apply for this certification:

  • Manager or consultant wanting to implement an Environmental Management System (EMS)
  • Project manager or consultant wanting to master the Environmental Management System implementation process
  • Person responsible for the Environmental or conformity in an organization
  • Member of the Environmental team
  • Expert advisor in environmental issues
  • Technical expert wanting to prepare for an Environmental audit function

The requirements for “Implementer” certifications are:

ISO 14001 Lead Implementer PECB Certified ISO 14001 Lead Implementer Exam or equivalent Five years: Two years of Environmental management work experience Project activities totalling 300 hours Signing the PECB code of ethics

If an applicant doesn’t have all requirements to apply for the credentials of ISO 14001 Lead Implementer he/she may apply for the credentials of ISO 14001 Implementer or ISO 14001 Provisional Implementer.

For certification purposes, the following implementation types constitute valid implementation experience:

  1. Internal implementation
  2. External/consulting implementation
  3. Partial implementation

To be considered valid, these implementation activities should follow best implementation practices and include most of the following activities:

  1. Drafting an EMS implementation business case
  2. Managing an EMS implementation project
  3. Implementing Environmental processes
  4. Managing Environmental processes
  5. Implementing objectives
  6. Implementing corrective or preventive action
  7. Performing internal audit
  8. Performing a management review
  9. Managing an Environmental team
